A printed halftone portrait of Dr. Charles A. Eastman, who also went by his Dakota name, Ohiyesa, appeared in print sometime between 1898 and 1916. Eastman, a Santee Dakota born in 1858, trained as a physician and became one of the best-known Native American writers of his era, with books that described Dakota life and his own upbringing to non-Native readers. Halftone reproduction, which allowed photographs to be printed alongside text in books and magazines, was the standard method of illustration during these decades, so the image reflects how public figures were presented to a broad audience.
