Edward Sorel drew this color portrait of Charles de Gaulle in June 1966, and the artist supplied the title. It ran in the December 1967 issue of *Esquire* under the caption "The Spokesman," a satirical treatment typical of the magazine's political illustration of the period. By then de Gaulle had served as president of France for nearly a decade and had pulled France out of NATO's integrated military command, a move that strained relations with Washington. Sorel's later exhibition of his unauthorized portraits at the National Portrait Gallery placed the drawing among his caricatures of public figures.
