Few details beyond the caption survive, but it places this newsstand in Omaha, the county seat of Douglas County on the Missouri River, in November 1938. The picture comes from the Farm Security Administration's documentary project, which during the Depression sent photographers to record American streets, storefronts and everyday routines as well as farms. Newsstands of that era were busy corners where people bought papers, scanned headlines and kept up with local and national events. The image survives as a safety film negative, a format common in the 1930s.
