Muddy Waters, the Mississippi-born blues guitarist and singer, is the subject of this 1964 publicity portrait, which carries a note identifying him as a Chess recording artist and bears the imprint of the Shaw Artists Corporation in New York. Chess Records in Chicago was the label that carried Waters through the 1950s and 1960s, releasing the electric Chicago blues records that shaped rock and roll in the decade that followed. Photographs like this one were made for booking agents and newspapers, and this print comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun collection held by the Library of Congress.
