Joseph Goebbels appears here with a feather in his cap, and the caption reads as sarcastic praise for a diplomatic windfall. The drawing is a small ink-over-pencil work on an index card, signed by Arthur Szyk, the Polish-born artist known for his sharp anti-Nazi caricatures in the late 1930s. The likely context is the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact of August 1939 and the Soviet invasion of eastern Poland that followed in September, which allowed Berlin to present itself as the beneficiary of a cynical bargain made at Poland's expense.
