A pencil sketch on green paper, titled as showing Gen. James S. Wadsworth just before his death, records a Union commander at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia in May 1864. Wadsworth, a New York landowner and politician who had entered the army in 1861, was mortally wounded there on May 6 while leading troops into the dense woods. He died two days later in Confederate hands. The drawing's small format and quick, unfinished look suggest it was made on the spot or from memory, and it belongs to a Civil War drawing collection now held by the Library of Congress.
