Cannonballs lie scattered along a rutted dirt track in this 1855 view, the detail that sets it apart from other pictures of the Crimean War. The title, "The Valley of the Shadow of Death," comes from Psalm 23 and was applied to the ravine on the road between Balaklava and Sevastopol. Roger Fenton made the photograph during his spring 1855 visit to the Crimea, one of the first times a war was recorded by a photographer in the field. Later writers have questioned whether Fenton placed some of the shot on the road himself, which makes the picture a useful case for thinking about how early war photographs were composed.
