Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore, died when British forces stormed his fortress at Seringapatam in May 1799, and this hand-colored etching, published in London that October, turns his death into a bawdy spectacle. Its punning title, "Besieging the haram," imagines the assault as a rush into the women's quarters rather than a fight for the walls. British satire of the period often portrayed Indian palaces as places of decadence and plunder, and this print fits that pattern. It played to public enthusiasm for the victory over a ruler long feared in Britain.
