Here the American Red Cross is presented as a mother, and the title, "Our greatest mother - join!", makes the appeal direct: Americans were asked to enroll. The subject headings also name the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and nurses, pairing the horror of war with the care that relief work provided. Issued by the American Lithographic Co. of New York in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it belongs to a wave of recruiting posters that accompanied the Red Cross's rapid growth in membership and volunteer service. Color lithography allowed such images to be reproduced quickly and in large numbers.
