Few posters from the postwar years carry a slogan as sweeping as this one, which casts the American Red Cross as "the greatest mother in the world" both in peace and in war. The lithograph was produced for the Third Red Cross Roll Call, held November 2 through 11, 1919, a membership drive that asked Americans to renew and expand their support after the armistice. The campaign drew on the wartime record of nurses, relief work and casualty care, and it aimed to keep the organization's large volunteer base intact as its mission shifted toward peacetime health and disaster relief.
