Few posters of the First World War asked Americans to do something as domestic as knitting, and this lithograph makes that request in its title: "Our boys need sox, knit your bit." Issued by the American Red Cross and printed in New York by the American Lithographic Company sometime between 1914 and 1918, it belongs to the wartime drive that turned knitting circles, church groups and parlors into small volunteer workshops. Socks were among the most urgently needed items for American soldiers in Europe, and the poster treats a simple pair of wool stockings as a personal contribution to the war effort.
