The first thing that sets this poster apart is that it is pure text, with no soldier, nurse or battlefield scene, just a red cross and a list of promises printed in large letters. Dated 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it was a fundraising and recruiting appeal for the American Red Cross, which had grown into a largely volunteer organization by then. The copy stresses that Congress had authorized the group, that President Wilson headed it, and that General Pershing endorsed it, all meant to reassure donors that their money was accounted for and put to use.
