Few war posters place a nurse at the center the way this one does: a public health nurse, shown as the figure the campaign asks viewers to support. Gordon Grant, later known for his maritime paintings, drew it as a color lithograph for the American Red Cross, whose membership drives after the United States entered the war in 1917 sought to enroll ordinary citizens in large numbers. The message ties each membership to the nursing work carried on at home and overseas, linking the Red Cross to the wartime health effort. Its slogan, "answering humanity's call," shows how the organization presented joining as a civic duty.
