The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton, and by 1914 it was a mature relief organization, though its role in the war that broke out in Europe that summer was still undefined. The United States did not enter the fighting until 1917, so in the early years of the conflict the Red Cross focused on disaster relief at home and on sending aid abroad through its contacts with European societies. Its wartime work expanded rapidly once the country joined the war, with volunteers rolling bandages, staffing canteens, and running hospital and welfare programs for soldiers and their families.
