Its title, "America's answer to humanity's challenge," sits beside the Red Cross emblem and presents joining the organization as a national duty. Printed in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it belongs to a wave of recruiting art that asked Americans to volunteer with the American Red Cross, which grew rapidly during the war. Its color lithograph format made it practical to print in quantity for public display. The subject headings also list nurses, which reflects the strong emphasis on women's service at home and abroad.
