A 1917 color lithograph by an artist named Dexter, this poster urges Americans to join the Red Cross with a blunt promise in its title: all you need is a heart and a dollar. It appeared in the first year of American involvement in the First World War, when the Red Cross was expanding quickly to support hospitals, nursing and relief work at home and overseas. The modest one-dollar membership it invokes was meant to lower the barrier, so that ordinary households could join alongside wealthier donors. Its large format, about 90 by 142 centimeters, was suited to display on city streets and in public buildings.
