This poster advertises the Red Cross Christmas Roll Call for December 16 to 23, a membership drive that asked Americans to join for a dollar, as the slogan "all you need is a heart and a dollar" puts it. It was issued in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, when the Red Cross was expanding its work at home and overseas. Harrison Fisher, one of the most popular magazine illustrators of his day, designed it, and the Niagara Lithographing Company of Buffalo, New York, printed it. The record also tags the poster with nurses and war funds, reflecting how the organization tied holiday giving to wartime relief.
