Set against the many Red Cross posters of the war years, this one stands out for its appeal to a presidential voice: its title quotes Woodrow Wilson, calling Americans to "the comradeship" of the organization. Its monogram identifies the designer as Leo Mielziner, a New York artist who later became known for stage design. Printed in New York in 1918, the poster advertised the Red Cross Christmas roll call, a membership drive that asked every American to enroll. The American Red Cross, swelled by wartime fundraising and volunteer work, used such campaigns to build its ranks during the First World War, and the poster's combination of text and color shows how the organization presented service as a shared civic duty.
