Printed in 1918, this poster announces the Red Cross Christmas Roll Call for December 16 through 23, a week-long drive to enlist new members. Edwin Howland Blashfield, a painter best known for allegorical murals, designed it, and the lithograph shows his decorative style applied to a wartime appeal. The Red Cross ran these membership campaigns across the country during the First World War, when its relief work at home and overseas depended heavily on volunteers and donations. The poster reflects how the wartime effort used art to turn patriotism into everyday participation.
