This Christmas poster ties a window candle to the blue-star service flag that hung in homes where a family member was serving in the First World War. Credited to L.N. Britton, it dates to 1917 or 1918, when the American Red Cross was running large membership drives during the war. The poster asks households to join as a holiday act, linking the season to the organization's nursing, relief, and supply work. Its color halftone printing was a relatively inexpensive way to reproduce posters in quantity at the time.
