Rather than showing soldiers or battlefields, this 1917 color lithograph ties a Red Cross membership drive to a Christmas scene: a candle in every window and a service flag in every home. The service flag, with a star for each family member in uniform, was a new wartime emblem, so the poster asks viewers to see Red Cross membership as part of the same home front sacrifice. Issued after the United States entered the war in April 1917, it urged civilians to join by the holiday season, with a goal of ten million new members. It shows how wartime fundraising borrowed the familiar sentiments of home and holiday.
