Few images in this group show the Union Pacific line as it crossed the high desert, but this albumen print of Citadel Rock in the Green River Valley does. The rock's eroded sandstone bulk rises above the valley floor, while the railroad works and bridge construction recorded in the subject headings mark the moment the tracks pushed west through Wyoming around 1868. The print was reproduced as plate XI in F. V. Hayden's *Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery* (1870), a volume meant to show the public what the new route would pass through. It later appeared in the Library of Congress's 2003 exhibition *Rivers, Edens, Empires*.
