Dial Rock rises from the Red Buttes country on the Laramie Plains of southeastern Wyoming, a landmark the survey crews saw from the line of the Union Pacific as they pushed west. The print is plate V from *Sun Pictures of Rocky Mountain Scenery*, a set of thirty albumen views issued in New York in 1870 by Julius Bien and drawn from the photographs of F. V. Hayden's surveys. Its title and subject tie it to the 1868 season, when the Union Pacific was building through this country and government geologists were mapping its rock and resources. The album was meant to show Eastern readers what the new route passed through.
