Few pictures in this gallery show a Maryland landscape used to sell a grocery staple, and this drawing does both. Its title places the viewer on Sugarloaf Mountain, the isolated quartzite peak near Dickerson in Montgomery County, where a field of loose rock tumbled down the slope and gave the scene its name. Dated around 1918, the ink and colored pencil work over a graphite underdrawing reflects a period when illustrated scenery often appeared in magazine and trade advertising. The parenthetical "Domino sugar" in the title points to that commercial purpose, so the mountain is shown as a pleasant destination rather than simply as a geological site.
