A Washington fielder reaches down to tag a sliding runner just before the ball meets the bag, a close play caught mid-motion. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, work made by a Washington, D.C., studio in the early twentieth century, when the local Senators were a fixture of the American League. Sliding into base was a common tactic then, and such plays often hinged on an umpire's split-second call. Dated only to between 1910 and 1930, the print offers a glimpse of the game in the nation's capital during those years.
