Harold Lloyd, the silent-comedy star best known for hanging from a clock face in "Safety Last!" (1923), is the figure this print singles out from the crowd of Hollywood names gathered at a Mayfair ball in 1936. Lloyd was among the most popular box-office draws of the 1920s and was one of the few silent-era comedians to keep his stardom through the transition to sound. Society balls of this kind, held at Los Angeles and Hollywood venues, were a regular stage for studio publicity, and photographs like this one helped set the glamour and social standing of the film colony for newspaper and magazine readers.
