This photograph records William Carlos Williams, the Rutherford, New Jersey poet who also practiced medicine for decades, in the context of a poetry award. The 1963 date places it near the end of his life, when his late work was receiving wide recognition. His collection *Pictures from Brueghel* won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry that year, though Williams died in March 1963, before the prize was announced. Portraits from this period often show writers who had spent much of their careers outside the literary mainstream, and this one captures a poet being honored only after a long, persistent body of work.
