Named for William Crooks, an engineer associated with the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway, this locomotive is said to be the first engine to run on the Great Northern's lines. The Manitoba road was one of the companies James J. Hill brought together to build the Great Northern, so the engine stands near the start of a system that would reach across the northern tier of states. The print, dating to about 1924, shows the machine decades after its early service, when the railroad was well established and the company was looking back on its origins.
