Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac from Washington, is the setting for this burial of a sailor described as the first naval dead of the Great War. The United States entered the conflict in April 1917, and the funeral of an early war death at the national cemetery carried public weight as the country's losses began to mount. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that recorded the capital's ceremonies and public life in the 1910s, and its date is recorded only tentatively.
