The title names the Atsina and the moment of a war party's departure, a subject Edward S. Curtis photographed in Montana in 1908. He published it in volume 5 of *The North American Indian*, his multi-volume effort to record Native life that he believed was passing away. By then the Atsina, also known as the Gros Ventre, lived mostly on reservation land in north-central Montana, and armed raids had long ended. The scene therefore reconstructs older custom, with participants in costume posed before the camera. The tipis in the subject headings reflect the camp setting Curtis often favored.
