Culp's Hill rises just south of Cemetery Hill, and this stereograph, published by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1923, shows the wooded ridge as it looked from the higher ground to the north. The company produced stereo cards like this in large numbers during the 1920s, sold to parlors and schools as a way to view landscapes in three dimensions. Culp's Hill was the scene of heavy fighting on July 2 and 3, 1863, when Union troops held its slopes against Confederate assaults, and by the 1920s the battlefield had become a major tourist destination. The card therefore records both the terrain and the growing interest in preserving the site as a memorial.
