Malvern Hill, an open rise of farmland in Henrico County, Virginia, is the setting here, and the title dates the fighting to July 1, 1862. That battle ended the Seven Days Battles of the Peninsula Campaign, when Union artillery massed on the high ground repulsed repeated Confederate assaults ordered by Robert E. Lee. The New York firm Currier & Ives, known for popular color prints of current events, issued this hand-colored lithograph, but its bracketed date of about 1861 predates the battle, so the actual publication date is uncertain. The print is listed as no. 0458 in a 1983 Currier & Ives catalog raisonné.
