Few theatrical posters from the late 1930s promise an "epic drama" of the years before the Civil War, and this one bills Battle Hymn, written by Michael Gold and Michael Blankfort, in exactly those terms. It was produced in California by the Federal Art Project, a Works Progress Administration program that employed artists during the Depression to design posters for federally sponsored theater. The silkscreen process gave the design flat, bold areas of color that could hold attention on crowded city streets, a hallmark of the program's work. The poster is a useful record of how New Deal theater was advertised in California.
