A New York hotel's pledge sets this silkscreen apart from other wartime bond posters. Its slogan, "If you can't go, buy war bonds," tells would-be travelers that staying home can still support the defense effort, and it casts the hotel trade as a stakeholder in that effort. Printed in 1941, when Washington was promoting savings bonds to pay for rearmament, the poster came from the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists to design public information posters. The Library of Congress keeps it in the WPA Poster Collection, where it shows how wartime finance was pitched to ordinary Americans and to businesses in the tourism trade.
