Addressed directly to "war workers," this 1941 Philadelphia poster asks whether they need a house, an apartment, or a room, and promises help finding one. The city's defense plants and shipyards were hiring quickly in the early 1940s, and many newcomers arrived with no place to live, so housing shortages became a real problem. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced silkscreen posters like this one to inform the public cheaply and quickly, and this example shows how federal art programs turned everyday civic needs into eye-catching graphics.
