A storekeeper's duty to keep food clean is the subject of this 1936 silkscreen poster. Its caption describes a merchant who sells wholesome food and must also keep his stock sanitary, which turns a shop visit into a plain public health lesson. Theodore Ward made the design for the federal poster program of the Works Progress Administration, which used inexpensive color printing to reach people across New York State. The subject headings for markets, merchants, food and sanitation reflect the period's concern with safe food handling in small neighborhood shops.
