A storekeeper hauling produce from a wholesale market back to his shop is the particular scene here, and the title spells it out: he buys his food at the market and carries it to his store nearby. Ward Theodore made the design in 1936 as a silkscreen color poster for the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which used the medium to publicize public services and everyday community life during the Depression. A later date stamp on the back, April 1937, suggests the poster was processed or circulated the following spring. The subject, a small merchant supplying his neighborhood, reflects the period's interest in local food distribution.
