Milhous's title promises costumes that "still survive" from before the Revolution, and the figure's plain dress and cap point to the Pennsylvania Dutch communities of the state's countryside. Katherine Milhous, a Philadelphia illustrator who later wrote and illustrated *The Egg Tree*, made the design in 1936 for the Works Progress Administration's poster program, which hired artists to promote state attractions during the Depression. The subject list also names fraktur, the decorated handwritten documents of German-speaking settlers, which reflects the folk traditions that drew visitors to rural counties. The print is signed in pencil by the artist and lists the Federal Music Project as sponsor.
