Ephrata Cloister, the 18th-century German religious community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is presented here as a place to visit rather than as a relic of the past. Katherine Milhous, a Pennsylvania illustrator who later became known for children's books, made this color lithograph in 1936 under the Federal Art Project, one of the Works Progress Administration's arts programs. The pencil signature and the number 100 mark it as part of the WPA poster series, and its focus on the Pennsylvania Dutch community reflects the Depression-era interest in regional heritage and travel.
