Milhous's poster sets the state's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, rather than its cities or industry, at the center of its appeal to travelers. The woodcut color technique gives the scene flat, bold shapes that suit a roadside or station display. The Federal Art Project produced this poster in 1936 as part of a national effort to promote regional tourism during the Depression, when states looked to their distinctive landscapes and folk traditions to draw visitors. Milhous, a Philadelphia artist better known later for children's books, drew on the same interest in Pennsylvania German customs that shaped her later work.
