Katherine Milhous's 1936 color lithograph promotes a visit to Ephrata, Pennsylvania, home of the Ephrata Cloister, an 18th-century celibate religious community founded by Conrad Beissel in 1732. The poster belongs to the Work Projects Administration's Federal Art Project, which made travel and tourism posters during the Depression to draw visitors and money to local places. Milhous, a Pennsylvania illustrator, later became known for her children's books, and her interest in the state's Pennsylvania Dutch heritage is evident in the poster's attention to the Cloister's historic character.
