Katherine Milhous set this lithograph in the Pennsylvania German countryside, where the little red schoolhouse was a familiar sight in farming communities. Printed in color in 1936 under the Works Progress Administration's poster program, it names the Federal Music Project as sponsor, which tied the state's heritage to wider promotion of cultural life and tourism during the Depression. Milhous, who later became known for her children's books, signed this example in pencil and numbered it 106. The record also lists fraktur, the decorative illuminated writing associated with Pennsylvania German households, which points to the folk traditions that drew visitors to the region.
