Katherine Milhous drew this 1936 color lithograph for the Works Progress Administration, and it turns to the Pennsylvania German communities of the state for its subject. It pairs traditional costume and handicrafts with fraktur, the decorated manuscripts that families used for birth and baptismal records. Milhous, a Pennsylvania illustrator, later returned to the same culture in her children's book *The Egg Tree*. The print is signed in pencil by the artist and marked No. 25, which suggests it was one of a numbered set issued under the federal arts program.
