This poster presents Pennsylvania German dress and handicrafts as a regional attraction, with fraktur, the decorated manuscript tradition associated with these communities, among its listed subjects. The Works Progress Administration's poster program, part of the federal relief effort during the Depression, commissioned posters like this one to promote travel, cultural events and local traditions. The Federal Music Project's sponsorship suggests the poster was tied to a musical or festival event as well as to tourism. Fraktur, with its painted hearts, tulips and birds on birth and baptismal certificates and hymn pages, was made by Pennsylvania German families from the 1700s into the 1800s, so the poster is also a 1930s view of a folk art already old by then.
