This 1936 color lithograph invites viewers to find colonial Pennsylvania still alive in its churches, costumes and crafts, and its focus on rural life, Pennsylvania Dutch communities and handmade pottery shows how the state marketed its countryside to travelers. The poster comes from the federal art program of the Depression years, when the Works Progress Administration commissioned posters to promote public attractions and events. Its appeal to heritage was a common tool of the period, offering city residents a picture of old-fashioned craft and community. The artist signed the print in pencil, which adds a personal touch to an otherwise public message.
