Rather than a city skyline or a single landmark, this poster shows the Pennsylvania countryside through the Pennsylvania Dutch, the German-speaking farming communities whose plain dress and close-knit farms drew visitors in the 1930s. Katherine Milhous, a Pennsylvania artist best known later for her children's books, made the color woodcut in 1936 for the WPA Federal Art Project, which produced posters promoting state tourism and public events. The flat, bold color shapes typical of woodcut give the rural scene a folk-art quality that suits its subject.
