Children in Pennsylvania Dutch dress are the focus of this 1936 color lithograph, made under the Federal Art Project to promote the state's countryside. Katherine Milhous, a Pennsylvania artist who later became known for her children's books, signed and numbered the print in pencil, as the Works Progress Administration's poster program often required of its editions. The poster reflects a period when tourism promoters pointed to Pennsylvania Dutch farms and customs as emblems of an older, slower way of life. Its flat shapes and simple layout show how WPA artists turned folk subjects into bold, modern graphic design.
