Katherine Milhous's *Rural Pennsylvania* turns a travel invitation into a close look at the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside, with children shown in the traditional dress of the region's German-speaking farm communities. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced posters like this one in the late 1930s to promote state scenery and draw visitors during the Depression. Milhous, a Pennsylvania illustrator later known for her children's books, brought a storybook clarity to this color lithograph. A stamp on the back dated May 2, 1940, shows that the poster was handled and filed as a working document of its time.
