A Federal theater Project production in Los Angeles is the subject here, and its title, "Class of '29," asks a question that 1936 audiences would have understood at once: where do the graduates of 1929 go from here? Those students finished school just as the stock market crashed that October, so the question carried the weight of a generation shut out of work. The Federal theater Project was one of the New Deal arts programs under the Works Progress Administration, which employed out-of-work actors, writers and designers. Its posters, printed in silkscreen color, were meant to draw crowds to plays that dealt directly with the hard times of the decade.
