Advertising a junior prom in the gymnasium of Oceanside High School on Long Island, with music by the Rhythm Kings Orchestra, this 1936 poster was made by the class of 40 and co-sponsored by the school. Posters like it were produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which employed artists to design inexpensive silkscreen notices for schools, theaters and community events during the Depression. The flat areas of color and bold lettering reflect the silkscreen method, which allowed many copies to be printed cheaply. A stamp on the back, dated July 18, 1939, shows the poster was still being handled by the program several years after it was made.
